Purchase Order Funding: A Practical Preparation Guide

Practical steps to help South African businesses prepare an informed funding discussion.

Start with a verifiable order

Identify the buyer, supplier, deliverables, payment terms and expected delivery date. The fact that an order exists does not mean every provider will finance it.

Calculate the full transaction cost

Include stock or materials, labour, transport, taxes, delivery costs, contingency and any costs needed before the customer pays. Compare the total against the expected gross margin.

Build a cash-flow timeline

Map when payments are actually due and when receipts are expected. Consider partial deliveries, acceptance periods and potential delays.

Prepare a coherent document pack

Typical evidence may include the purchase order, supplier quotations, business registration information, financial statements, management accounts, bank statements and relevant contracts.

Check suitability, not just approval

Assess whether the proposed finance costs are affordable and whether the business can perform on time. Providers independently determine eligibility and terms.
